Tonight’s Tenebrae service remembers the last night Jesus spent with his friends, the Feast of Passover. It is a service of remembrance and one in which we as disciples can reflect on his last words and acts. It is also a time to remember how the world was challenged to recognize the light when it came into being. Tonight’s service is a Tenebrae service. Tenebrae is the latin word for “darkness” or “shadows”. As we recall the story of the Last Supper, the disciples deserting Jesus, Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion, candles will be extinguished and the room will be brought into darkness.
